XFL Looks to Capitalize After a Strong Week 1

The first weekend of XFL games are in the books and based on Google Trends and the buzz on social media, it looks like there is momentum heading into next weekend.

The ratings are out for the first game that aired at 2 pm eastern on FOX between the Seattle Dragons and the DC Defenders. The game drew 3.3 million viewers. That is a great number, especially for a Saturday afternoon broadcast.

The AAF drew 2.9 million viewers in prime time for their first game on CBS but their ratings nosedived after the first week.

The XFL has the benefit of a strong TV deal with all of their games airing on national television. Games will air across ABC, ESPN, Fox and Fox Sports 1 throughout the season with ESPN airing the championship game in April.

In addition to the strong viewership, XFL averaged 17,000+ paid fans per game this weekend and merchandise sold well above expectations. Fans at the DC Defenders game said most of the merchandise was gone by the end of the game with most of the hats being sold by halftime.

Here is the schedule of games for week two:

NY Guardians vs. DC Defenders (Sat, 2 pm eastern on ABC)
Tampa Bay Vipers vs. Seattle Dragons (Sat, 5 pm eastern on FOX)
Dallas Renegades vs. LA Wildcats (Sun, 3 pm eastern on ABC)
St. Louis BattleHawks vs. Houston Roughnecks (Sun, 6 pm eastern on FS1)
